Meet Your Future Neighbors

John and Zoe Moore

Zoe and John Moore are an active, well-traveled, history-loving couple who are eagerly anticipating their move to The Outlook later this year.

Zoe was born and spent her early years just outside of Philadelphia. It was here in this historic city that she first developed an interest in the subject of history. Her family then moved to Ohio, where she completed high school. Zoe then attended Connecticut College for Women in New London and got a degree in psychology. John was born and raised in Cincinnati. He also went to college in Connecticut, attending Wesleyan University in Middletown (a men’s college at the time). He received his degree in biology. Zoe and John met through a mutual friend who thought they might hit it off. John got in touch with Zoe and they have been together ever since (well over 60 years!). They married in 1964, during the fall after their respective graduations.

After college, John went on to The College of Dentistry at Ohio State University in Columbus. During this time, Zoe worked for OSU in psychological research and testing. This was during the Vietnam War era, and when John graduated in 1968, he went into the service. He was in the Army for three years, beginning with a one-year internship at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., where their daughter Koren was born.  They then spent a year in Massachusetts, and John was deployed to Korea for his third year. While he was overseas, Zoe and Koren lived in Cincinnati; it was a trial period to see if Zoe might enjoy settling there upon John’s return. The thought was that John would practice there after he did his oral surgery training and residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Their son Kyle was born in Ann Arbor, and the family did, indeed, settle in Cincinnati after John’s residency.

In Cincinnati, John was in private practice and was also a Professor of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati. Zoe was a voracious volunteer. She worked at her church, in the schools, and in the community at large, but her most beloved job was at the Cincinnati Art Museum, where she served as a docent for twenty years. “It was a big part of my life,” Zoe notes. Art history is a primary interest of hers. “I really liked working with people, trying to make things interesting for them,” she says.

After 25 years in Cincinnati, John faced some health problems that made it necessary for him to retire from his oral surgery practice. It’s at this point that he pivoted and followed another love of his: ancient history (and Biblical history in particular). He attended the non-affiliated seminary at Trinity Southwest University (now Veritas International University) in Albuquerque and earned a doctoral degree in Biblical studies. For the next 25 years, he taught and led student tours to Israel and Jordan. He was also part of an archeological dig in Jordan that spanned 16 years.

Around the year 2000, the Moores left Cincinnati for Casey Key, Florida. They moved into a home previously owned by John’s parents, who once wintered there. John continued his work as an adjunct professor. Zoe worked as a guide at Historic Spanish Point and at the Sarasota National Cemetery. They were considering moving into a senior community in Florida when Kyle and his family relocated to the Dallas area. Thinking it might be nice to live near their younger grandchildren, they changed plans and moved to an over-55 community in Frisco in 2020. They are fully enjoying the perks of grandparenthood—especially getting to attend Texas high school football games, where one granddaughter is a cheerleader and the other is on the drill team.

After the Moores moved to Texas, they started hearing about The Outlook and were very impressed with Forefront Living. After some friends visited and sang the community’s praises, they followed suit and signed up right away. “We’re getting excited about our move…The two things that we’re looking forward to are making friends with similar interests and living with fewer responsibilities!” Zoe says.

Zoe and John love to travel. Some of their favorite locales include Easter Island, Machu Picchu, and Petra—all of which they got to visit before they became major tourist attractions. Nevertheless, the Biblical sites remain closest to their hearts. “Being in those places brought The Bible alive, and that was important to us,” says Zoe. They continue to enjoy traveling but plan to stay closer to home from here on out. “We’ve seen a lot of the world and we’ve enjoyed it. At this point in our lives, we really want to see more of our own country…and it’s a little easier to do that kind of travel,” says Zoe. John adds, “It’s fun to drive to places and do our own thing.”

John and Zoe also enjoy bike riding. They’re looking forward to riding on the trail near The Outlook and to the ease of having bike storage in the garage. Zoe is an avid reader and is hoping for a book club or two at The Outlook. She also enjoys playing mahjongg. John is still teaching and has lectured on numerous topics relating to history, archaeology, and Biblical studies for the last 20 years in a wide variety of locations. He currently teaches at First Frisco Global Methodist Church.

Greetings!
As many of you know, the 60-day letters for the northside residences were mailed on Friday and you also got an email from me. As I mention in that correspondence, your new apartment home will be available to move into beginning December 10, 2024 (or perhaps sooner!). Please contact Rachel McGowan, Move-In Coordinator, to schedule a closing and moving date that works best for you.

In addition, it is my pleasure to introduce one of our newest team members, Yashica Washington, who has joined us as Director of Assisted Living. Move-In Planning with Dear Rachel

Rachel McGowan

Dear Rachel,

Did I read that I can schedule my closing now if I have a residence on the northside reserved?

Sincerely,
Curious Northsider

Dear Curious Northsider,

Yes, you read that correctly! As mentioned in Kristen’s most recent email, we have begun scheduling “soft closings” for VIPs with reservations on the northside (_119, _121 –_142) of the independent living building. A “soft closing” is a wonderful opportunity for you to visit the community (or, if you’re remote, we can send the documents to you) and meet with Angela, our business office manager. During this time, you’ll sign the necessary paperwork and have all of your questions answered.

Why opt for a soft closing? It helps streamline the final steps. Once completed, all you’ll need to do is return to exchange your check (or wire receipt) for your keys, giving you immediate access to your new residence.

We’d love for you to join one of our upcoming Roundtable Meetings at the Information Center:

  • Monday, 10/21 from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Wednesday, 10/23 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

RSVP to (972) 996-3887 or info@nullTheOutlookAtWindhaven.org

I will also be scheduling walk-throughs for the northside residences, starting with the 4th and 5th floor at this time, and would be happy to schedule yours as well.

Looking forward to connecting with you soon!

Warm regards,
Rachel

PS: Please remember it’s important to keep me in the loop on all moves and large deliveries. We must have a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for those companies, even for the cottages.

October 30, 4-5 pm
