Meet Your

Future Neighbor

Rick Wiley

Although Rick Wiley is a native Texan (born in San Antonio), he was only an infant when his father’s military career took their family to Germany and then England for Rick’s formative years. As a boy, he went to English schools in a rural village about 40 miles from London. There was no mega-grocery store or fast food in this idyllic spot, but rather charming, locally owned shops and restaurants. When he got older, Rick went to the American schools in England, but he did get to play for the England team in the Little League World Series! He remains a huge baseball fan and now has the pleasure of watching his kids and grandkids play his beloved sport.

At age 13, Rick returned to Texas. His family moved to San Angelo, where Rick went to high school, graduating early at age 16. He then attended Angelo State and got a degree in accounting in 1976. Shortly thereafter, Rick went to work for GTE (GTE later merged with Bell Atlantic and became Verizon). He stayed with the company in its various forms for nearly 40 years. Rick started out as an auditor, also worked as a controller, and later on, moved to Human Relations. For the last twelve years of his career, he was Director of Mergers and Acquisitions, responsible for all the “people aspects” of mergers, divestitures, and acquisitions (e.g., employee pensions, 401Ks, healthcare retirement benefits, etc.). Most of his work in this position revolved around divestitures, as Verizon spun off almost all of their landline businesses. He enjoyed his colleagues and “really wasn’t keen to retire” when he did so in 2010. In fact, he got bored with retirement and went back to work for a Verizon spin-off for several years until his wife, Donna, convinced him to retire for good.

Donna and Rick met in 1981 through friends at work. She was a legal secretary and an executive secretary at Verizon. Their whirlwind romance culminated in their getting married just six weeks after they met! Donna was a few years older than Rick and had three children whom Rick has always considered his own. Over the years, they ended up working in the same office twice; she was his boss’s secretary. Donna also worked as a church secretary for a few years after leaving Verizon. Sadly, Donna passed away in April of 2021; she and Rick would have been married for 40 years last October. They have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (one of whom simply calls him “Great”!). Rick is fortunate in that all of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids live in Texas. His oldest son lives on a small ranch in Junction, his daughter is in San Angelo, and his youngest son lives in Denton.

Rick’s work took the family all over the United States. They lived in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, Salt Lake City, and New Jersey. Rick always loved moving and saw it as an exciting and new adventure each time they packed up and left. He also notes that they were always fortunate to make good friends everywhere they went. Dallas was always “home,” though, as it is primarily where the kids grew up and where their roots are.

Rick started to look at new places to live after Donna passed away. He has always enjoyed apartment living and is looking forward to no more house and yard maintenance! He looked at numerous places but found that The Outlook at Windhaven seemed to embody the active adult lifestyle he was seeking (versus the “one foot in the retirement home” feel). In December he attended the VIP “Merry Mixer” for The Outlook and was pleased to meet and chat with his future neighbors. He is looking forward to getting to know this active, worldly, and interesting group of people.

Rick is an avid golfer who has been at it for over 40 years. He is a member of the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine and is also on the Board of Directors of the North Texas Senior Golf Association. The latter is a weekly league of golfers over the age of 50; they play a different course every week across the DFW Metroplex. He notes that members are from their mid-50s to their 90s and “a lot of them shoot their age!” Rick also enjoys golf-centric vacations—every few years he goes to Ireland and/or Scotland for golf and each year he travels with a group of 12 friends to Bandon Dunes, Oregon for one wonderful week. “It’s the highlight of my year. We’re called the Bandon Boys,” he says.

Even when golf is not involved, Rick loves to travel and every year he takes at least a two-week trip. He and Donna especially loved cruises, both ocean and river. Some of his favorite spots include Italy (especially Positano), Copenhagen, and London. New York City was also a special favorite, and Donna became quite the NYC tour guide. Rick is looking forward to a river cruise on the Rhine in October of 2022.

Rick is very active in his church, LifePoint in Plano. He has been a member there for a year and is glad that it is close to The Outlook at Windhaven. He also loves to read and is currently fond of British mysteries, biographies on Winston Churchill, World War II history, C.S. Lewis, and Ernest Hemingway.

Last, but absolutely not least, is Rick’s sweet dog, Molly. Molly is a Morkie—a Maltese/Yorkie mix. Molly is eight and an adorable and delightful companion to Rick.
