Meet Your

Future Neighbors

Bill and Mary Ellen Humble

Newlyweds Bill and Mary Ellen Humble met while taking part in their church orchestra, she on the alto sax and he on the clarinet, but they truly hit their stride (pun intended!) when they began taking dance classes together in 2019. Numerous dance classes and a pandemic later, they decided to tie the knot and find a new home together.

Mary Ellen was born in a small city along the Ohio River called Martins Ferry. She had a nice, stable upbringing—living 28 years of it on the same street! Most of her family is still in Ohio around Lake Erie, but two siblings remain in Martins Ferry. Mary Ellen’s first career was as a teacher. Ohio University opened a teacher training branch within her high school, so she was able to take her first two years of college within her high school building.

Teachers were desperately needed at the time, so this teacher cadet program allowed its students to start teaching after two years of college. Mary Ellen became involved in a federally funded program in her hometown that was a follow-up to Head Start. The University of Georgia (UGA) sponsored the program, and when they started a new venture in Pocatello, Idaho, Mary Ellen went there to help the school district sort things out. She continued to work with UGA for a few years, traveling to help with various programs. She met her first husband while in Georgia and they moved to Lufkin, TX in 1973; she has lived in Texas ever since.

Initially, Mary Ellen taught and substituted in Lufkin and her husband worked at Angelina College. Eventually, both were ready for a change. Mary Ellen’s husband began working as a technical writer for Texas Instruments, and the couple moved to Plano. Then Mary Ellen learned the technical writing trade and also worked for Texas Instruments. She was there for about seven years when her division was sold to Air Liquide. She stayed for a while, doing contract work at Lockheed Martin for three years before retiring. Mary Ellen’s first husband passed away in 2015. Through him she has five stepchildren who are spread all around the country.

Bill was born and raised in San Antonio. He went to junior college there for two years before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em Horns!), where he completed a degree in engineering. He did a bit of graduate school but then got married and moved to Dallas to work for Southwestern Bell. He spent ten years at Southwestern Bell. After Southwestern Bell, Bill went to work for Westinghouse on a contract for the U.S. Navy. He spent five years in Idaho Falls, Idaho in the early 1980s teaching sailors how to start up, shut down, and handle casualties on naval nuclear reactors. Bill found the work to be great fun. After his stint in Idaho, he transitioned to working in commercial nuclear power and was an engineering supervisor for 27 years for South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company in Bay City (about 90 miles southwest of Houston). He retired in 2011, and he and his wife moved to Plano to be closer to their grandkids. Bill’s wife died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2016; they had been married 46 years. They have three children and eight grandchildren who live in Orlando, Dallas, and Denver.

A few years after Bill’s wife passed away, he decided he would try his hand at dancing and got hooked. In 2019, he asked his friends in the church orchestra if any of them would like to take a group ballroom dance lesson. He and Mary Ellen had been in the orchestra together for about seven years, and she said she’d like to give it a try. So they embarked on the dance lessons but spent time together doing other things as well. The pandemic took hold and they hung out even more. As soon as life opened up again, they went to all manner of dance classes. They’ve done all of the ballroom styles, line dancing, folk dancing, and are currently involved in a square dancing class. (As a side note, Mary Ellen has been doing folk dancing since the 1960s; she fell in love with it right after college and has been doing it ever since!) Right now, the couple’s challenge is trying to hold themselves to one extracurricular activity a day—their dance cards require some advanced scheduling skills.

Before Mary Ellen and Bill began dancing and dating, they were separately considering their choices for downsizing and moving. Mary Ellen started visiting different places and was drawn to the continuing care model. It gave her a sense of security, and she liked the thought that she could be as active as she liked but that there were also options for when your level of activity might slow down. Bill also had been weighing his options, knowing there would be a time when he was no longer interested in keeping up his home. He sang in a choir that visited various senior homes once a month, and this was a good way for him to do some comparison shopping—discerning what he did and did not like about the different places.

Bill was drawn to communities where the residents were very active, and Mary Ellen liked the ones with indoor swimming pools, among other things. About the time they started thinking seriously about committing to each other, they were getting marketing materials from The Outlook at Windhaven. Bill proposed marriage, and the process of looking for a place to live together became more of a priority. They began the process of downsizing with Bill moving into Mary Ellen’s home and decided The Outlook would be where they eventually landed as a couple. They wanted to be in Plano near their church, First Baptist Plano, and close to the activities they love—including dancing at the various venues and recreation centers and attending community theater shows.

Mary Ellen and Bill have enjoyed getting acquainted with fellow VIPs at Outlook get-togethers. They are looking forward to simplifying their lives through downsizing and are excited about potential activities at The Outlook. And who knows? They may just be the ones to lead The Outlook’s inaugural line dancing class!

Meet Your

Future Neighbor

Elizabeth Thomas

Elizabeth Thomas currently lives in Carrollton, where she enjoys volunteer work with her church, babysitting for her grandchildren, and reading anything she can get her hands on! She was born on the Gulf Coast of Texas in a small town south of Houston. She lived there for 18 years and it was “like Mayberry.” “Everyone knew each other, helped each other, and took care of each other,” she says. After this idyllic childhood, Elizabeth went to Austin College in Sherman, Texas. She was a political science and history major and completed the school’s 5-year teacher program, emerging with a master’s degree upon graduation. In addition, she emerged having met her husband, Ray, during freshman year!

Elizabeth went on to teach Texas history and American history at the middle school level for four years in Plano. After she had kids of her own, Elizabeth traded teaching middle school for teaching preschool and did so for eight years. The preschool hours allowed her to be home for her kids when they got home from school. Elizabeth loved teaching preschool; ages 3 and 4 are her favorite—those years when the world is wondrous and a pat on the head and a few gentle words can stop the tears. The lesson plans she used as a preschool teacher have come in handy with her grandchildren, whom she’s had the pleasure to care for in their preschool years.

Elizabeth and Ray got married halfway through her husband’s time in medical school. She put him through the final two years of school, and upon completion of his internship, they moved to Rochester, Minnesota, for his residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic. They then returned to Texas and lived in both Sherman and Plano. Along the way, the couple welcomed three children. Their older daughter also went to Austin College and is now an architect in Washington, D.C. (Elizabeth loves to visit and tour around the Capitol because it appeals to the history teacher in her!). Their son is married with four children and lives near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She enjoys traveling and tries to see them as much as possible. Their younger daughter lives nearby in Carrollton, is married, and has two daughters.

In the fall of 2015, Ray retired. Among other things, Elizabeth and Ray enjoyed spending a portion of his retirement babysitting their new granddaughter for two days a week. Sadly, in 2017, Ray was diagnosed with kidney cancer; he passed away in 2019. “I kind of had to reinvent myself,” says Elizabeth. Part of this included volunteering at church, which was much larger than the churches she belonged to previously. “They have so many opportunities for service,” says Elizabeth. One of her favorite volunteer positions is working at the food pantry. “I think sometimes that when you’re sad and feeling sorry for yourself and you help someone, you realize that gosh, you really don’t have problems,” she says. She notes that the people she helps inspire her with their smiles and good humor despite their own difficult circumstances. When Elizabeth departs after her shift, her heart feels good, she feels a sense of accomplishment, and she is exhausted! “It has really saved my life and been a blessing to me,” she says. She is also a part of the prayer shawl ministry at her church, which involves crocheting with a group once a month to make shawls that are given to people who are sick or somehow in need.  She finds the activity to be a way to “renew the peace in her soul.”

Recently, Elizabeth was reflecting on her reasons for wanting to move to The Outlook at Windhaven. “Number one is I want someone to change out the batteries in my smoke detector!” she laughs. “I just want to pick up the phone and have somebody else drag the 8-foot ladder in!” All kidding aside, Elizabeth notes that after 42 years of marriage, having roommates in college, and sharing a room with her sister before that, living alone is strange. So, while help with maintenance issues, safety, and security are very important, the fun and socialization that will be available through The Outlook are also paramount. Elizabeth looks forward to going with fellow residents to events, having communal meals, and enjoying the entertainment options that will be provided by The Outlook.

Because she likes to plan ahead, Elizabeth did her research and wanted to learn more about the various retirement options and their financial models. She and Ray visited a few locations, and it helped them figure out what they were looking for, “kind of like visiting colleges,” says Elizabeth. “I like the location of The Outlook. It’s across the street from a park that I’ve visited many times with my grandchildren,” she adds. She also likes that The Outlook’s location is so close to her family and friends, as well as to shopping and restaurants she already knows and likes. The CCRC model is also very appealing. Having had experience with loved ones needing various types of care and having to move them from place to place, it brings her peace of mind knowing that if she were to need assisted living, it would be right there. Elizabeth also feels that going to live at The Outlook before she might need extra care allows her time to get to know people and make connections while she is feeling good and able to experience all the place has to offer.

Having some doubts about a big decision like this is perfectly normal, and Elizabeth recalls having had a moment of panic after she first signed on. She then received some materials from the staff at The Outlook that comforted her. She also had questions that were answered immediately and felt good about the check she had written. “You really want to be in a place where they do what they say they will do, but the people at The Outlook are going beyond my expectations.” The timeline of the construction is good for Elizabeth. It gives her plenty of time to downsize and another year to babysit her granddaughter. She is really looking forward to the move!

Elizabeth has given a lot of thought to being part of the first group of people to live at The Outlook at Windhaven. “We have a unique opportunity to set the foundation for the culture and the atmosphere,” she says. “Maybe since we’re all new, we can set up a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. If that gets established, newer residents can build on that.”

Meet Your

Future Neighbors

The Raymonds

Joseph and Lisa Raymond recently became Outlook “VIPs.” Currently happy Plano residents, they are looking forward to meeting their future neighbors!

Lisa is a “thoroughbred Ukrainian.” Her parents were from Poltava and she has three older siblings who were born there. Lisa was born toward the end of World War II, when things were very difficult in Ukraine. Her father, hoping to escape the violence and give his family a better life, made the decision to take his wife (who was pregnant with Lisa at the time) and their kids out of the country. He said goodbye to his extended family, bought a horse and buggy, and the five of them set off. When Lisa’s mother went into labor, they looked to the owner of a remote cottage nearby for help. Reluctant to get involved, the owner said they could come in long enough for the baby to be born and then leave immediately.

Lisa’s father helped with the delivery, her brother bundled Lisa up, and the six of them traveled through several countries before ending up in Germany. They stayed there for three years while Lisa’s father tried to get them cleared to come to the United States. With their only choice for resettlement being Brazil, they relocated to Paraná, where they lived for 16 years. In 1961, they finally succeeded in getting cleared to the U.S. and moved to Chicago, where they had some family.

In 1963, Lisa married her first husband, and by 1966, the couple had two children of their own. In 1970, the couple bought a Winnebago and took a long road trip with their young family. Upon reaching Texas, they fell in love with the Dallas area and stayed there for 25 years. They eventually returned to Chicago to care for Lisa’s in-laws, who were in poor health. Sadly, she lost her father-in-law, husband, and one of her sons, all in the space of five years. Lisa returned to Frisco to be near her other son and granddaughters, now 25 and 27.

Joseph Raymond was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended Tulane University, where he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering. Joseph got his start right out of school with a job at Texas Instruments; it was the beginning of an engineering career that took him to many different companies over the years, including Cisco, where he retired 13 years ago.

Joseph met and married his first wife in New Orleans when he was in his early 20s. The couple had three children together, two boys and a girl. Their children now live in Frisco, Murphy, and Houston. Joseph’s daughter has three kids, which between him and Lisa brings the tally of grandkids up to five. Joseph’s wife passed away in 2004.

For Joseph and Lisa, finding one another was a lucky twist of fate. Years before they met, Joseph’s wife introduced him to a man he ended up sponsoring in their parish for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). When Lisa moved back to Texas, it was through a support group for widows and widowers that she met the wife of Joseph’s sponsoree, who exclaimed, “You’ve got to meet this man in our church—you two would be perfect together!” When they met, Lisa says she fell for Joseph immediately. They are both grateful for all the life choices that brought them together in marriage for 17 years.

The Raymonds only recently discovered The Outlook at Windhaven, which was shocking to them as they currently live less than ten minutes away! When they received a mailing about The Outlook, they were eager to check it out, as their wish has always been to stay in the area to be close to their family and friends, their doctors and their church. It turned out to be a great fit—they only wished they had learned about it sooner!

Joseph and Lisa currently live in a 5,000-square-foot home they love and have enjoyed working on, but as Lisa puts it, “Over the years, the house is becoming bigger and bigger in our eyes.” Plus, having both been caregivers and realizing how challenging it is, they became interested in the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model. The insight gained from their experiences led them to want to be more prepared so that their children will not have to do as they did.

A desire to downsize is another reason the Raymonds are ready for The Outlook. “We want to sort through our things now, not only so our family has less to deal with down the road, but also so Joseph and I can enjoy our lives while we’re still in good health. We both come from families of long-lived individuals, so we’d really like to be settled prior to being in our 80s. The longer you wait, the harder it is physically to go through the moving process,” says Lisa.

While the location of The Outlook is what the Raymonds were most excited about, they also love that it is brand new and they can personalize their apartment to their preferences. They found The Outlook’s floor plans to be thoughtfully designed with large bathrooms, big outdoor spaces, and little wasted space.

Lisa and Joseph love to travel and have taken all sorts of trips, but now they particularly enjoy European river cruises—recent trips included a cruise from the Black Sea to the North Sea and a tour of Ireland. For their next trek, they’d like to visit Sicily (Joseph’s family is originally from there; his maternal grandparents arrived here in the 1910s).

In addition to traveling, Joseph’s interests include bowling and dabbling in woodworking. He has also been a stained-glass artist, is a computer enthusiast and was once an avid online gamer. Lisa’s passions include reading, biking, and walking. Additionally, she loves spending time with friends and is looking forward to making new friends when she and Joseph move to The Outlook.

VIP Exclusive

Mingling and Mimosas

Outlook VIPs enjoyed mingling with mimosas and their future neighbors at our exclusive event on April 7 at Legacy Hall.

What happens

NEXT?

It was so exciting to see such a large crowd of VIPs at the “Mingling and Mimosas” event at Legacy Hall on April 7. As mentioned at the event, we have had a tremendous amount of interest in The Outlook and the sales team is very busy with appointments! And thanks to the strong response from VIPs like you, we’re on the cusp of achieving our 70% presales requirement and have started the financing process. Construction of The Outlook is scheduled to begin this summer and we are on schedule to open in 2024. As soon as we have the groundbreaking ceremony date, we will share it with you!

With the start of construction also comes an increase in pricing for The Outlook—but not for you, since you have locked-in Charter Member pricing and benefits. There’s still time for you to refer your friends so they can also benefit from the savings, as we’ve extended our VIP Referral Rewards Program through May 31 (see more below).

Also, with the start of construction comes a phase called Personalization. This is an exciting time that allows you to select colors, finishes, etc., for your new home. At the start of the Personalization phase, you will receive a very detailed floor plan of your specific residence, which is a great planning tool. More details to come!

We are so excited to be on this journey with you!

Meet Your

Future Neighbor

Rick Wiley

Although Rick Wiley is a native Texan (born in San Antonio), he was only an infant when his father’s military career took their family to Germany and then England for Rick’s formative years. As a boy, he went to English schools in a rural village about 40 miles from London. There was no mega-grocery store or fast food in this idyllic spot, but rather charming, locally owned shops and restaurants. When he got older, Rick went to the American schools in England, but he did get to play for the England team in the Little League World Series! He remains a huge baseball fan and now has the pleasure of watching his kids and grandkids play his beloved sport.

At age 13, Rick returned to Texas. His family moved to San Angelo, where Rick went to high school, graduating early at age 16. He then attended Angelo State and got a degree in accounting in 1976. Shortly thereafter, Rick went to work for GTE (GTE later merged with Bell Atlantic and became Verizon). He stayed with the company in its various forms for nearly 40 years. Rick started out as an auditor, also worked as a controller, and later on, moved to Human Relations. For the last twelve years of his career, he was Director of Mergers and Acquisitions, responsible for all the “people aspects” of mergers, divestitures, and acquisitions (e.g., employee pensions, 401Ks, healthcare retirement benefits, etc.). Most of his work in this position revolved around divestitures, as Verizon spun off almost all of their landline businesses. He enjoyed his colleagues and “really wasn’t keen to retire” when he did so in 2010. In fact, he got bored with retirement and went back to work for a Verizon spin-off for several years until his wife, Donna, convinced him to retire for good.

Donna and Rick met in 1981 through friends at work. She was a legal secretary and an executive secretary at Verizon. Their whirlwind romance culminated in their getting married just six weeks after they met! Donna was a few years older than Rick and had three children whom Rick has always considered his own. Over the years, they ended up working in the same office twice; she was his boss’s secretary. Donna also worked as a church secretary for a few years after leaving Verizon. Sadly, Donna passed away in April of 2021; she and Rick would have been married for 40 years last October. They have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren (one of whom simply calls him “Great”!). Rick is fortunate in that all of his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids live in Texas. His oldest son lives on a small ranch in Junction, his daughter is in San Angelo, and his youngest son lives in Denton.

Rick’s work took the family all over the United States. They lived in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, Salt Lake City, and New Jersey. Rick always loved moving and saw it as an exciting and new adventure each time they packed up and left. He also notes that they were always fortunate to make good friends everywhere they went. Dallas was always “home,” though, as it is primarily where the kids grew up and where their roots are.

Rick started to look at new places to live after Donna passed away. He has always enjoyed apartment living and is looking forward to no more house and yard maintenance! He looked at numerous places but found that The Outlook at Windhaven seemed to embody the active adult lifestyle he was seeking (versus the “one foot in the retirement home” feel). In December he attended the VIP “Merry Mixer” for The Outlook and was pleased to meet and chat with his future neighbors. He is looking forward to getting to know this active, worldly, and interesting group of people.

Rick is an avid golfer who has been at it for over 40 years. He is a member of the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine and is also on the Board of Directors of the North Texas Senior Golf Association. The latter is a weekly league of golfers over the age of 50; they play a different course every week across the DFW Metroplex. He notes that members are from their mid-50s to their 90s and “a lot of them shoot their age!” Rick also enjoys golf-centric vacations—every few years he goes to Ireland and/or Scotland for golf and each year he travels with a group of 12 friends to Bandon Dunes, Oregon for one wonderful week. “It’s the highlight of my year. We’re called the Bandon Boys,” he says.

Even when golf is not involved, Rick loves to travel and every year he takes at least a two-week trip. He and Donna especially loved cruises, both ocean and river. Some of his favorite spots include Italy (especially Positano), Copenhagen, and London. New York City was also a special favorite, and Donna became quite the NYC tour guide. Rick is looking forward to a river cruise on the Rhine in October of 2022.

Rick is very active in his church, LifePoint in Plano. He has been a member there for a year and is glad that it is close to The Outlook at Windhaven. He also loves to read and is currently fond of British mysteries, biographies on Winston Churchill, World War II history, C.S. Lewis, and Ernest Hemingway.

Last, but absolutely not least, is Rick’s sweet dog, Molly. Molly is a Morkie—a Maltese/Yorkie mix. Molly is eight and an adorable and delightful companion to Rick.

Meet Your

Future Neighbors

The Hubberts

The Hubberts

Cathy and Tom Hubbert are currently Plano residents who look forward to being in a cottage at The Outlook at Windhaven.

Cathy was born and raised in Southern California. After high school she moved north to attend a nursing program at California State University, Chico (called Chico State at the time). She had a subsequent career as a registered nurse for almost 40 years before retiring about seven years ago. Cathy particularly liked working at the VA in Los Angeles, where she first delved into research. While there, she worked with stroke patients, and those at risk for stroke, who were part of randomized national studies on stroke prevention. “I followed that group of patients for about seven years, and it was really interesting,” she says.

Tom was born in Lubbock on April 1 during a snowstorm! He grew up there and after high school went to UT Austin for a couple of years. He worked a few jobs before deciding he needed more sellable skills and so returned to Lubbock to do a one-year vocational training program to become an operating room technician. Upon completion, Tom and a friend from the same program packed up a VW bug and a tent and traveled around in search of jobs. Tom’s best offer came from a hospital in Chico, where he arrived in the spring of 1973. “I thought I’d died and gone to heaven,” says Tom. He loved the climate, the variety of things to do, and Chico’s huge municipal park.

Tom and Cathy met a few months later while Cathy was in her second year of nursing school. She and Tom were at a mutual friend’s party, standing in a very long keg line–long enough that it afforded them time to chat. Tom asked her out for the next day, and though she could not go because of finals, she may as well have, since they ended up talking on the phone for hours. (And the rest, as they say, is history.) They got married in 1977, and their son was born in Chico a couple of years later.

Tom had always been interested in airplanes and even had a private flying license. To help him pursue this interest professionally, the family moved to Prescott, Arizona and Tom enrolled in an aviation management program at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After he completed this degree, Tom worked for an aviation insurance underwriting company (now called Global Aerospace) for the remainder of his career. In addition to the birth of a new career, Prescott also bore witness to the birth of the Hubberts’ second child, a daughter.

Tom’s work took the Hubberts back to California. With nurses always in high demand, Cathy had no trouble finding work in hospitals along the way. They loved being back in northern California and spent a lot of time going camping and fishing in the Sierras. But, when they closed down the branch where Tom worked and offered him a promotion and a move to either Kansas City or Dallas, the answer was clear. “Tom is a native Texan, so it was a no-brainer for us,” laughs Cathy. They’ve been in the Dallas area for about 25 years now and have lived in the same home the whole time. Though their kids moved to Texas under protest at the time, they both continue to live here by choice!

Both of the Hubberts’ kids live within a 25-minute drive, and they now have a 15-year-old grandson and a three-year-old granddaughter. The family all see one another often. Tom and Cathy were both far from their own parents after they left home, which could be difficult, so they are pleased and truly appreciate having their own kids and grandkids so close by.

When they lost their own parents, Tom and Cathy gained some perspective on how they wanted to live as they got older. Cathy’s parents were reluctant to move when their health was in decline, which was difficult on everyone. She didn’t want their children to face a similar situation, and they didn’t want to place the burden of decision-making on their kids. “We wanted control of our destiny,” she says.

Cathy worked as Care Coordinator at Baylor Plano Hospital and saw a lot of admissions, discharges, and transfers to different levels of care. Over time, she was impressed by the fact that she saw very few patients from Presbyterian Village North. She also noted that those few PVN residents with whom she did have contact were very happy and almost never were readmitted. “I thought, ‘They’re doing something right down there,’ and it stuck with me,” she says. When she saw an article in the newspaper about The Outlook at Windhaven, which was to be about a mile from their house and run by the same organization as PVN (Forefront Living), her interest was piqued. Soon thereafter, Tom and Cathy got a flyer in the mail about The Outlook and they started going to events associated with the community. “It was just perfect because of its location and its mission and its success,” she says.

Because The Outlook is so close to their current home, it will be easy for the Hubberts to keep in touch with their family and friends and still use all of their current support services. They like spending time in the park across the street from the future home of The Outlook. It’s been fun to watch the site evolve and try to figure out where their cottage will be located.

A fun fact about the Hubberts is that they are classic car enthusiasts and own a 1951 Ford Tudor and a 1962 Corvette. They belong to the Early Ford V8 Club and the Corvette Legends of Texas. These clubs meet monthly and offer up lots of fun social events and an annual holiday party that the Hubberts enjoy. They also like to travel and envisioned themselves doing a fair amount of traveling upon retirement. While they have not yet been able to do much of this, they keep busy playing golf, taking walks, and watching their granddaughter a few days a week. In addition, Tom enjoys biking and Cathy is an avid flower gardener.
